Abstract

A slow-acting fertilizer is obtained by heating a mixture of phosphatic materials, such as ground rock phosphate or bones, with sulphuric acid, say of 77-78 per cent. concentration, at 250-600 DEG C. employing 0.6 to 1.6 mols. acid per mole P2O5, with additional acid to react with impurities. Before the heating step, the mixed rock and acid may be preliminarily heated to a temperature below 250 DEG C. The material to be heated may also be prepared by adding to phosphate rock, rock which has already been reacted with the requisite amount of sulphuric acid to give the correct P2O5 acid ratio in the final mixture. The calcining may take place in a rotary cylinder in an atmosphere of air, waste gases, or steam. The product may be granulated by mixing it with ammonium or sodium nitrate in the presence of water. According to the Provisional Specification, the best treatment may take place at any temperature above 200 DEG C. and the mixture of phosphatic material and acid may stand for 12 hours before being heated.ALSO:A mixer fertilizer is obtained in granules by mixing sodium or ammonium nitrate with a slow-acting phosphatic fertilizer in the presence of water, such phosphatic fertilizer being prepared by subjecting a mixture of phosphatic material (e.g. rock phosphate) and sulphuric acid in the proportions of between 0.6 and 1.8 mols. acid per mol. P2O5 to a temperature between 250 DEG and 600 DEG C. (see Group III)
