Abstract

339,340. Odda Smelteverk Aktieselskabet, and Johnson, E. Oct. 27, 1928, [Convention. date]. Manures.-Rock phosphate is treated with nitric acid preferably of about 50 per cent strength, of which either an excess or a deficiency may be used, solutions being obtained of such concentration and composition that by cooling, for example to temperatures from about 10‹ C. down to the freezing point of the solution, a substantial part of the calcium nitrate separates as Ca(NO3)2 4H2O, leaving the phosphoric acid and the remainder of the lime in the mother liquor. The rock phosphate may be calcined prior to the treatment. Before separation of Ca(NO3)2 4H2O and while the solution is still warm insoluble residues may be removed by filtration. In this case a smaller quantity of nitric acid may be used initially, a further addition being made after the filtration. The mother liquor may be partially or completely neutralized with ammonia and subsequently dried to obtain a mixed fertilizer. The mother liquor may also be utilized to obtain compound fertilizers, phosphoric acid ammonia or alkali phosphates, chemical salts and the like by known processes. Examples are given.
