Abstract

Urea-calcium sulphate [4CO(NH2)2-CaSO4] is obtained by suspending calcium cyanamide in water, passing carbon dioxide therethrough to precipitate calcium as calcium carbonate and liberate free cyanamide, removing the calcium carbonate, mixing sulphuric acid with the cyanamide solution, the ratio of sulphuric acid to cyanamide being in the molecular proportions 1 : 4, converting the cyanamide to urea by heating and hydrolyzing, and then after concentrating the mixture, neutralizing it with the bye-product calcium carbonate thereby combining nascent calcium sulphate with the urea.ALSO:A fertilizer is obtained by suspending calcium cyanamide powder in water, passing carbon dioxide therethrough to precipitate calcium as calcium carbonate and liberate free cyanamide, removing the calcium carbonate, mixing sulphuric acid with the cyanamide solution, the ratio sulphuric acid to cyanamide being in the molecular proportions of 1 : 4 converting the cyanamide to urea by heating and hydrolysing, and then after concentrating the mixture, neutralizing it with the byeproduct calcium carbonate thereby combining nascent calcium sulphate with urea to form urea-calcium sulphate (4CO (NH2)2.CaSO4). The sulphuric acid employed may be waste acid containing amino acids, remaining after the preparation of glutamic acid by hydrolysing protein. A saturated solution of potassium nitrate, potassium chloride, or potassium sulphate may be added to the urea-calcium sulphate the resulting mixture being converted into a syrup by evaporation under reduced pressure, mixed with powdered aluminium phosphate, monocalcium phosphate or calcium superphosphate, broken into pieces after being kneaded, and dried.
