Excess acid in the mixed fertilizers containing ammonium sulphate and ammonium nitrate, obtained according to the process of Specifications 370,993, 370,995, and 370,996 by the reaction of ammonia with nitric acid and sulphuric acid under such conditions that the heat of the reaction causes practically all the water to evaporate, is neutralized by alkalies, other than ammonia, or other substances suitable for neutralizing free acids, e.g. calcium carbonate, dolomite, blast furnace slag, Thomas meal, &c. The process is stated to improve the granular consistency of the mixed fertilizers. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also states that ammonia may be used for the neutralization. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
