Abstract
A product suitable for use as a manure, for improving alkaline soils, or as a weed-killer, is obtained by treating bauxite or like earthy materials, containing aluminium oxide and more or less iron oxide, with concentrated sulphuric acid or fuming sulphuric acid, the materials being mixed together in the cold in such proportions as to yield directly a product which can be ground and strewn. To ensure a dry product calcium carbonate may be added to the reacting substances or calcium sulphate may be added when the reaction is complete. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) described also the use of sulphur trioxide instead of sulphuric acid.
