Abstract

<PICT:0388417/III/1> Mixed fertilizers containing ammonium nitrate and ammonium phosphate are continuously produced by bringing together phosphoric acid, nitric acid and ammonia in a saturater vessel under such conditions that the water present is completely or almost completely evaporated and the contents of the vessel are maintained weakly alkaline, neutral or weakly acid; the free acid in the last case being preferably less than 5 per cent. The melt in the saturator which may contain solid phosphate and possibly solid nitrate in suspension may be withdrawn and directly solidified. The process may be carried out in the apparatus shown comprising a saturator vessel 4, inlets 3, 6, for the acids and the ammonia respectively, a stirrer 5 and an overflow 7 leading to a cooling roller 8. It is stated that by creating a rapid circulation in the saturator the contents tend to separate out into zones having differing compositions; the reaction mixture may be withdrawn from these zones and solidified. Other fertilizing substances such as potassium salts and/or inactive substance may be added during the process or to the solidified products. Specifications 292,068 and 298,196, [both in Class 111, Sewage &c.], are referred to.
