Abstract
In obtaining mixed fertilizers composed of ammonium sulphate and ammonium nitrate by the reaction of ammonia with nitric and sulphuric acids under such conditions that the reaction heat evaporates the water simultaneously introduced as described in the parent Specification, only the evaporation of the major proportion of the water is effected in the main reaction vessel, from which a continuous or intermittent transfer of the liquor together with any separated salts, to an auxiliary vessel takes place. In this further evaporation is effected whereupon the product is transferred to any known drying apparatus. The water content may be reduced to 4 or 5 per cent in the main reaction vessel. The auxiliary vessel may be heated to a temperature higher than that of the main reaction vessel. In the auxiliary vessel any free acid may be neutralized by ammonia.
