Abstract
Ammonium sulphate is made by neutralizing sulphuric acid with ammonia in two or more stages with intermediate cooling. The first stage may be effected in a preliminary vessel until a solution of ammonium sulphate or bisulphate is obtained which is unsaturated on cooling to 20 DEG C. The heat of reaction is dissipated in a cooler and the cold solution fed to a saturation vessel into which ammonia is fed until ammonium sulphate precipitates. The separated mother liquor, after addition of sulphuric acid to cause a slight heating and prevent deposition of solid, may be fed to the preliminary vessel or the saturator. Alternatively, the solution in the preliminary vessel may be continuously circulated through a cooler and a volume equal to that of the added sulphuric acid supplied to the saturator. The sulphuric acid may first be diluted with water or mother liquor and cooled in a separate vessel, or the mother liquor may be mixed with sulphuric acid and returned to the saturator as described above.
