Abstract
A process for the production of chrome-leather includes the step of treating a pelt with water and an alkali metal polyphosphate and an alkali metal bisulphate, preferably as a mixture, prior to or during chrome-tanning of the pelt. The ratio of alkali metal polyphosphate to alkali metal bisulphate is preferably from 1:2 to 2:1, by weight, and not more than 2% of the alkali metal polyphosphate should be used, calculated on the weight of the pelt. The mixture may be prepared by fusing an alkali metal phosphate and alkali metal bisulphate and rapidly cooling the mass. The pelt is preferably de-lined and bated before treatment.ALSO:An agent for treating leather to be chrome tanned consists of an alkali metal (e.g. Na) polyphosphate (preferably 3-10 P atoms) and an alkali metal (e.g. Na) bisulphate in the ratio 1:2 to 2:1 by weight. The agent may be prepared by the melting together of NaH2PO4 and NaHSO4 and rapidly cooling the mass.
