Abstract
In the production of diammonium phosphate by neutralizing phosphoric acid with ammonia in two stages, the amount of ammonia absorbed in the first stage by the boiling acid being equivalent to more than one molecule per molecule of acid but not more than can be substantially absorbed, the absorption of the complementary amount of ammonia necessary to cause separation of the salt takes place at a temperature of about 60 DEG -70 DEG C. Between two-thirds and three-quarters of the ammonia necessary may be absorbed in the first stage, the neutralization being completed in a second saturator. Air is blown into the saturators to stir the contents and to eliminate the heat generated, the air and steam from the first saturator being used to preheat the mother liquor from the separation of diammonium phosphate, which is then mixed with phosphoric acid and sometimes water, for example part or all of the condensate from the heat exchanger, and fed to the first saturator. The phosphoric acid either before or after the above dilution is used to absorb the ammonia escaping from the second saturator.
