Abstract
Alkali meta- or pyro-phosphates, which may contain orthophosphate or be dissolved in a mixture of the corresponding acids, are converted into alkali orthophosphates by being intimately mixed at ordinary pressure and while at temperatures above 250 DEG C. with such quantities of water, aqueous phosphoric acid, or phosphate solutions, that, after the evaporation occurring during hydration, there still remains a slight excess of water. Examples relate to the treatment of the product obtained by heating together potassium chloride and phosphoric acid, the resulting hydrated salt obtained in one instance being the acid salt KH2PO4.H3PO4. Residual pyrophosphate may be removed from the hydrated salt by recrystallization, and the mother liquors then obtained be used for hydrating further quantities of meta- or pyro-phosphates. The process may be applied to the hydration of ammonium meta- and pyro-phosphates.
