Abstract

A modification of the process of the parent Specification for leaching phosphate rock is characterized in that recrystallization of calcium sulphate semihydrate to the dihydrate in the phosphatic solution produced is carried out in the presence of an excess of sulphuric acid or alkali or ammonium sulphate. Thus, the rock may be leached with an equivalent amount of sulphuric acid, and excess alkali or ammonium sulphate be then added, prior to recrystallization; or a quantity of sulphuric acid or acid alkali sulphate equivalent to the total quantity of phosphate rock may be used to treat only a major portion of the rock, and the remainder of the rock is added after the calcium sulphate first precipitated has recrystallized. In the latter case, no excess of sulphate remains in the finished product. Alternatively, an excess of soluble sulphate may be kept in circulation, this excess being recovered in the mother liquor after neutralization of the phosphoric acid, and again added to the teaching operation or on recrystallization of the gypsum. In an example, the beneficial effect of adding excess alkali or ammonium sulphate is shown by the decreasing amounts of phosphoric acid included in the dihydrate.
