Abstract

Diammonium phosphate is made by absorbing ammonia in a boiling p solution of phosphoric acid or monoammonium phosphate, the escaping ammoniacal steam being supplied to a solution containing phosphoric acid. Ammonia may be supplied to a saturator containing a boiling concentrated monoammonium phosphate solution, and the escaping ammoniacal steam supplied to a dilute phosphoric acid solution produced for example by leaching phosphate rock with sulphuric acid or with another mineral acid and alkali sulphate. The phosphoric acid is preferably preheated to boiling and is in such quantity that the monoammonium phosphate produced corresponds in amount to that used in the first saturator. The escaping steam may be used to preheat the phosphoric acid. In order to produce sufficient of the mono-salt in the second saturator, excess of ammonia may be supplied to the first saturator. Crystals of diammonium phosphate are separated directly or after cooling in a centrifuge, the mother liquor being returned together with the next charge of monosalt from the second saturater, which is first freed from the precipitated impurities of iron, aluminium, calcium, &c., and concentrated. Alternatively, phosphoric acid obtained as above and concentrated is neutralized directly in a series of absorption vessels, to the last of which ammonia is supplied until diammonium phosphate is formed. Crystals are separated, the vessel then being recharged with phosphoric acid and made the first of the series, the mother liquor being introduced into the last vessel of the series.
