Abstract

Monocalcium phosphate is obtained by reacting crude phosphate with sulphuric acid to obtain a solution fully saturated in the hot state with monocalcium phosphate and almost saturated with dicalcium phosphate, separating the residue and deposited calcium sulphate, and cooling to crystallize monocalcium phosphate. Liquor obtained by washing the residue, and preferably also the mother liquor from the crystallizing step after evaporation if necessary, are re-used in the process. In the latter case the amount of sulphuric acid used is correspondingly reduced. By so selecting the concentration of sulphuric acid that the water introduced with it in the form of washing water is removed as water of crystallization of the calcium sulphate and of the monocalcium phosphate, evaporation of the mother liquor from the crystallizing step is rendered unnecessary. The mother liquor containing free phosphoric acid may alternatively be used for the production of dicalcium or ammonium phosphates. Two examples are given.
