Abstract

Zinc lactate is produced by adding zinc sulphate solution to a solution of calcium lactate obtained by the reaction of a carbohydrate with calcium hydroxide. Preferably the lactate and sulphate solutions are both hot, and the calcium sulphate is removed while the mixture is hot, and zinc lactate is crystallized by cooling.ALSO:Carbohydrates are converted into lactic acid by heating to at least 200 DEG C. under pressure above atmospheric (such as 20-35 atmospheres) with an alkali or alkaline-earth hydroxide. From the product insoluble matter is removed, and the lactic acid is recovered as such, for instance, by addition of sulphuric acid or as zinc lactate by addition of zinc sulphate. In an example, cane sugar is dissolved in hot water to make a solution of about 40 per cent, calcium hydroxide is added, and the mixture is heated to 210-220 DEG C. at 25-30 atmospheres pressure with stirring for 1,5-2,5 hours. The filtered reaction liquor may be allowed to stand at room temperature or at 5-10 DEG C., preferably with stirring, to crystallize calcium lactate, sulphuric acid being added to the mother liquor to liberate lactic acid; or sulphuric acid may be added to the whole solution to obtain lactic acid. Alternatively the calcium lactate solution may be treated with zinc sulphate solution, both solutions being preferably hot. The calcium sulphate is removed while the liquor is hot and zinc lactate is crystallized out by cooling. The mother liquor may be treated with sulphuretted hydrogen or barium sulphide to produce lactic acid by removing the zinc, in the latter case sulphuric acid being then added to remove the barium.
