Abstract
Sodium salicylate is recovered from crude solutions by crystallization at a temperature below the dehydration temperature of the hexahydrated salt, i.e. below 20 DEG C. The crystals so obtained, after removal of mother liquor and washing with cold water, may be dehydrated at a low temperature, preferably in vacuo, to yield a purified sodium salicylate, or they may be dissolved in water and acidified to yield a relatively pure salicylic acid; in either event, the hydrated salt may first be further purified by recrystallization. The crystallization may be facilitated by seeding the solution with a small amount of the crystalline hydrated salt, and details are given of the initial preparation of a small amount of the hydrated salt from the commercial anhydrous salt. An example is given also describing the treatment of crude sodium salicylate prepared by carbonating sodium phenolate. The processes described above may be applied to the treatment of sodium o-cresotinate, the trihydrate of which is stable up to about 50 DEG C.
