Abstract

Boric acid and primary sodium phosphate are obtained by treating an aqueous solution of borax with orthophosphoric acid, crystallizing the boric acid formed, separating it from the mother liquor and treating the mother liquor for the recovery of the primary sodium phosphate. According to an example, an aqueous solution of borax was treated while stirring with 65 per cent phosphoric acid at a temperature of 70 DEG C. Boric acid was crystallized by cooling to 10 DEG C., and separated from the mother liquor by centrifuging. The mother liquor was freed from residual boric acid by treatment with steam and primary sodium phosphate was then crystallized out. The final mother liquor may be re-used. The boric acid which may contain a small proportion of primary sodium phosphate may be used in the manufacture of glass.
