Abstract

In the production of a calcium magnesium phosphate from a solution obtained by treating crude calcium phosphate with hydrochloric or nitric acid, the unwanted calcium is first precipitated by adding magnesium sulphate, and the required salt is then precipitated by adding magnesium hydroxide, the quantities of these reagents being chosen according to whether the desired product is CaMg2(PO4)2, Ca2Mg(PO4)2, or CaMgH2(PO4)2. The magnesium sulphate may be a crude product such as Keiserit. The magnesium chloride or nitrate recovered from the mother liquor may be decomposed by heat to yield magnesium oxide and acid which is used to treat further quantities of crude phosphate.
