Abstract
<PICT:0770172/III/1> In a process of preparing ammonium sulphate from NH3 or a gas mixture consisting of NH3 and steam and H2SO4 in a saturator by removing the crystals formed from the saturator as a crystal paste, separating the crystals from the mother liquor and washing the crystals in a centrifugal or other separator, and returning the resulting diluted mother liquor to the saturator after heating, the diluted mother liquor is heated in a direct contact condenser by the steam escaping from the saturator. The washing water may also be heated in a direct contact condenser by escaping steam. A crystal paste is withdrawn from saturator 1 containing a saturated solution of ammonium sulphate containing free H2SO4 to which a mixture of NH3 and steam and sulphuric acid are continuously supplied through 1a, 1b respectively. Mother liquor separated from the crystal paste in centrifuges (not shown) and washing water is sprayed by pump 17 through pipe 12 into condenser 11, where steam aspirated from saturator chimney 2 through pipe 10 is condensed and heats the liquor from say 75 DEG to 95 DEG C. All crystal seeds remaining in the liquor are dissolved by this treatment and the heated liquor passes through 13 to tank 14 and may be continuously circulated by pump 15 to condenser 11 through riser 13a or pumped through pipe 16 and spray 19 into the vapour chamber 20 of the saturator, with consequent absorption of unabsorbed NH3 in the chamber to reduce loss. Owing to the absence of seeds in the recirculated liquor coarser ammonium sulphate crystals are formed in the saturator. Cold water at say 15 DEG C. is sprayed through 5 into condenser 4 and is heated to say 95 DEG C. by steam aspirated from chimney 2 through pipe 3. Hot water passes through 6 to tank 7 and may be continuously circulated by pump 8 through riser 6a to condenser 4. Hot water is withdrawn at 9. The continuous circulation of liquid to the condensers through risers 6a, 13a is optional.
