Abstract

Phosphate fertilizer compositions are made by treating calcium metaphosphate and rock phosphate, dolomite, or limestone in granular form with sulphuric acid. The metaphosphate is converted to o-phosphate which on further acidulation releases free acid which is neutralized by the phosphate rock, limestone or dolomite. In Examples, calcium metaphosphate and limestone or dolomite ground to 100/200 mesh are mixed together dry, and sulphuric acid and water added to form a slurry. This heats up and thickens and may then be ammoniated and cured, or heated in a rotary tumbler up to 800 DEG F. to form a crust on the nodules produced. As ammoniating agents, ammonium hydroxide or nitrate may be used with or without urea and formaldehyde.
