Abstract

A process for the production of ammonium phosphate fertilizers comprises mixing aqueous phosphoric acid with particles of vermiculite and thereafter passing gasous ammonia through the resulting mass while agitating the same. The ammonia is passed through the mixture until absorption of ammonia virtually ceases and the granules, which previously appear damp, assume a dry appearance. The phosphoric acid used may be previously partially neutralized with ammonia. The examples disclose the formation of (1) a substantially mono-ammonium phosphate fertilizer and (2) a substantially diammonium phosphate fertilizer.
