Abstract

Granular fertilizer containing ammonium phosphate having an N: P atomic ratio of 1À3:1 to 2:1 is produced by reacting phosphoric acid (wet process phosphoric acid containing less than 60% by weight P 2 O 5 ) with NH 3 gas under superatmospheric pressure giving an ammonium phosphate solution containing 4 to 20% by weight of water and having an N: P atomic ratio of 0À8:1 to 1À5:1, expelling the ammonium phosphate solution from the high pressure zone to a zone at ambient pressure, mixing with particulate solids and granulating the resulting mixture, the mixture being treated during granulation with a NH 3 , whereby the N: P atomic ratio of the ammonium phosphate is increased to 1À3:1 to 2:1. The NH 3 gas is reacted preferably, at a superatmospheric pressure of 15 to 50 p.s.i. gauge, and the temperature of the phosphoric acid may be from ambient temperature to 100 C. Sulphuric acid may be used mixed with the phosphoric acid. Flash evaporation occurs on expelling the ammonium phosphate from the high pressure zone into the atmosphere and ammonium phosphate is formed having a water content of 2% to 10% by weight.
