Abstract

Ammonium polyphosphate produced by concentrating by heating wet-process orthophosphoric acid e.g. to at least 80% by weight on an impurity-free basis, until at least 70% (preferably at least 80%) of the P2O5 value thereof to the acyclic (i.e. polyphosphate) form and reacting the acid with ammonia and at 250-450 DEG F. The acid is preferably heated under a pressure of 20-400 lb/inch2, and is preferably concentrated to at least 80% (by weight IFB) of P2O5. The product may be mixed while liquid with fertilizer materials, for example, sources of nitrogen (e.g. urea), and/or potassium salts (added after urea), or trace mineral elements, and the resulting mixture which may be formed in discrete particles and then cooled to form a glass. The non-crystalline glass, having a homogeneous distribution of fertilizer, and meltable to a free-flowing liquid, is claimed per se.
