Abstract
Ammonium polyphosphate, i.e. a mixture of the ortho- and non-ortho-forms, which may have a P2O5 content of 56-65%, is produced by introducing continuously gaseous ammonia and orthophosphoric acid, concentrated to 50-58% P2O5, to a reaction zone, which may be maintained at above the solidification temperature of the reaction mass, in which they are reacted at above 300 DEG F., e.g. 400-500 DEG F., and utilizing the heat of reaction to partially dehydrate the phosphate during the reaction. A melt of the polyphosphate is formed, which is continuously removed and separated from water vapour and ammonia under conditions whereby the melt solidifies into dry, non-hygroscopic particles of ammonium polyphosphate.
