Abstract

<PICT:0636035/III/1> Diammonium phosphate is produced by introducing equimolecular proportions of monoammonium phosphate and gaseous ammonia into a closed reactor fitted with a settling leg, containing a saturated solution of diammonium phosphate at a temperature between 70 DEG and 90 DEG C., having a pH value between 6.8 and 7.8, whereby diammonium phosphate crystallizes out, the mother liquor, removed by centrifuging being recirculated to the reactor. Monoammonium phosphate crystals enter the water-cooled reactor 3 through a worm feed 2 from storage hopper 1, excess liquid being drawn off at 4, and ammonia gas enters through pipe 7. Crystals of diammonium phosphate are formed and on sinking are removed from the base 10 of the reactor by worm 11 to centrifuge 13 for subsequent drying in a rotary drier 15. The diammonium phosphate mother liquor passes from the centrifuge 13 through pipe 20 to storage vessel 21 from whence it is recirculated by pipe 23, preferably to the base of the reactor at 24.
