Abstract

In the production of cellulose acetate threads by extruding an aqueous acetic acid solution of cellulose acetate into an aqueous coagulating bath containing potassium acetate and acetic acid, the excess acetic acid accumulating in the bath is recovered by withdrawing part of the bath either continuously or intermittently, cooling to precipitate a double compound of acetic acid and potassium acetate from the withdrawn bath and heating the double compound to dissociate it substantially into acetic acid and potassium acetate. Preferably, prior to the precipitation, solid potassium acetate is added to the withdrawn bath to ensure that all the acetic acid will be removed, and the mixture is then heated to dissolve the acetate. The double compound is separated from the mother liquor and heated at atmospheric pressure and 120-297 DEG C. to distil off the acid, or heated in a closed vessel at 200-250 DEG C. and then injected into a chamber containing air at reduced pressure and fitted with a condenser wherein the acid is condensed. The chamber may contain heated rollers on to which the molten compound is run, the potassium acetate then being collected on the rollers. The recovered potassium acetate is added to a succeeding portion of withdrawn bath. The mother liquor is divided into two portions, the first portion containing acetic acid and potassium acetate being returned to the coagulating bath to maintain its concentration constant. The second portion is evaporated to yield a further portion of potassium acetate for addition to a succeeding portion of the withdrawn bath. The cyclic process may be effected with two vessels which function alternately as the mixer in which solid potassium acetate is added to the withdrawn bath and as the evaporator in which evaporation of the second portion of the mother liquor is effected, in which case the potassium acetate recovered by heating the double compound is also added to the evaporator. Specifications 281,827, [Class 2 (iii)], and 652,844 are referred to.
