Abstract

Artificial filaments, fibres, threads and the like are obtained by extruding a solution of cellulose acetate into an aqueous coagulating bath containing potassium acetate in a concentration of from 20 per cent up to saturation point. The bath preferably also contains free acetic acid, e.g. in a proportion of 50-250 grams per litre. The spinning solution may be heated to a temperature higher than that of the coagulating bath, e.g. the solution may be at 40-55 DEG C. and the coagulating bath may be maintained at 15-45 DEG C. The spinning solution may be obtained by dissolving cellulose acetate in acetone or acetic acid or it may be a solution of cellulose acetate in aqueous acetic acid obtained by acetylating cellulose in presence of acetic acid, adding water for ripening the cellulose acetate in solution, and neutralizing the acid catalyst. The cellulose acetate may be present in the solution in a proportion of 9-15 per cent. The solution may be clear or pigmented. If a solution of cellulose acetate in aqueous acetic acid is used, the concentration of acetic acid in the coagulating bath may be prevented from increasing, by continuously removing some of the liquid, recovering acetic acid from the withdrawn liquid, and feeding p potassium acetate solution containing a lower concentration of acetic acid into the bath. Threads having filament deniers as low as 1.5 may be obtained with tenacities of at least 1.1 grams per denier and dry extensibilities of 25-40 per cent. The threads obtained are resistant to direct cotton dyes and to acid wool dyes. In an example, cotton linters, pretreated with a solution of sulphuric acid in acetic acid, are acetylated with a mixture of acetic anhydride, acetic acid, and sulphuric acid, the reaction temperature being kept below 40 DEG C. After the acetylation, water is added and the solution is ripened at 26 DEG C. The catalyst is then neutralized by adding sodium acetate in aqueous acetic acid. The solution is filtered, de-aerated, and then extruded into an aqueous solution of potassium acetate and acetic acid. The filaments obtained are taken up by a godet and stretched while passing to a second godet. The spinning solution may contain a pigment such as titanium dioxide. In another example, cellulose acetate solution is extruded through a jet having 3000 orifices and the filaments produced are withdrawn from the bath as a tow of parallel filaments. The tow is washed and then stretched in boiling water. Specifications 7341/03, [Class 2], 3973/11, 13872/14, 15544/14, 177,868, 179,234, 198,392, 211,889, 230,813, 312,671, 334,838, [all in Class 2 (ii)], 341,148, 343,062, 434,425, 509,702 and 652,845 are referred to.
