Abstract

In the production of urea from carbon dioxide, water and excess ammonia under pressure, the vapours produced are expanded and pressure distilled at 20-45 atmospheres pressure, and the resulting carbon dioxide <PICT:0756934/IV(a)/1> and ammonia passed to a condenser at 60-90 DEG C., which is fed with liquid ammonia and up to 25 per cent water. Aqueous urea is withdrawn from the pressure still, and the carbamate, which is condensed free from solid particles is returned to the autoclave at increased pressure. In the Figure, the products from the autoclave 1, which is fed with carbon dioxide through pump 9 and ammonia through pump 11, pass to a pressure still 13 whence the resulting urea solution is collected in a separator 3 and the carbon dioxide and ammonia condensed as carbamate in the chamber 5. The latter is fed with make up ammonia from pump 11 and an aqueous solution from column 6, which is fed with the minimum amount of water to dissolve the ammonia and carbon dioxide leaving the chamber 5. The condensate from the latter is recycled by means of pump 10 heated to a temperature higher than the temperature of crystallization of the carbamate.
