Abstract

A mixture of phosphoric acid and sulphuric acid is partially neutralized with sufficient ammonia to neutralize all the sulphuric acid to diammonium sulphate plus an additional amount of ammonia not exceeding 0À8 moles per mole of the phosphoric acid to form a slurry which, together with particles comprising diammonium phosphate and sulphate and with at least sufficient ammonia to convert the acid and monoammonium salts present in said slurry to the corresponding diammonium salts, is passed to an ammoniator-granulator. The phosphoric and sulphuric acids suitably contain from 55-70 and from 95-98% by weight of the respective acids and if desired from 15- 40% of the total sulphuric acid may be directly added to the granulator. The fully neutralized granulate is sieved and undersized product is returned to the granulator at a weight ratio of 1À5 to 5 times the amount of product granules. Potassium chloride may be added to the granulator to provide a balanced fertilizer.
