Abstract
A phosphate fertilizer is made by mixing an inorganic fertilizer material consisting of phosphate rock, dolomite, or limestone with the metaphosphate of calcium, sodium, or potassium, and treating the mixture with a mineral acid (sulphuric, nitric, hydrochloric, or phosphoric acid) in the presence of sufficient water to effect hydrolysis of the metaphosphate. The use of sulphuric acid with calcium metaphosphate is excluded. Hydrolysis and acidulation proceed concurrently, and the proportion of phosphate rock, dolomite, &c. is sufficient to neutralize the acid. In examples, approximately equal quantities of the meta-phosphate, phosphate rock, and acid are mixed together with a small amount of water to form a thick slurry, which is then delivered to a rotary drier at 150 DEG to 300 DEG F. After curing, a dry crumbly solid is formed. This may be ammoniated, using ammonia, or ammonium salts or urea/ammonium hydroxide solution followed by agitation until a dry granular product is obtained. The initial reactants may be treated with a small amount of a non-ionic surfaceacting agent, e.g. the condensation products of ethylene oxide with higher alcohols, alkyl phenols or mercaptans. Specification 828,892 is referred to.
