Abstract

<PICT:0829490/III/1> Phosphate fertilizers are made by treating calcium metaphosphate with sulphuric acid in the presence of water, whereby the metaphosphate is hydrolysed to o-phosphate and this is further acidulated, the acid product being then neutralized by adding an ammoniating agent. The amount of water used is 1 to 5 times the stoichiometric quantity, and the acid/metaphosphate ratio being 0.1 to 1.5 by weight. In a suitable apparatus, sulphuric acid and calcium metaphosphate ground to 8 mesh, are admitted to the upper tier 1, Fig. 2, of a pug mill, and water is added to form a slurry and mixed by contra-rotating paddles. The mixture soon hydrolyses and is fed at about 100 DEG to 300 DEG F. by a rotary agitator section 8 in a deep bed to a second tier pug mill 2 supplied from below with an ammoniating agent fed through spray pipe 11. Preferably a salt having a negative heat of solution is added at the point of ammoniation to reduce the temperature of the semi-plastic solid, e.g. KCl, NH4NO3, (NH4)SO4. The neutralized product may be mixed with ammonium sulphate produced in situ, from sulphuric acid, and ammonia supplied to spray pipes 11b, 11a respectively. The product is then further mixed to form a dry crumbly solid in mill 3. As ammoniating agents, anhydrous ammonia, or solutions of ammonium hydroxide, ammonium nitrate, urea-ammonium hydroxide with or without formaldehyde, or mixtures of these, may be used.
