Abstract
Phosphatic fertilizers are obtained by reacting phosphatic material with a strong mineral acid in a closed container and subsequently admitting ammonia thereto. Acids specified are sulphuric or phosphoric acid, with or without ammonium sulphate or phosphate respectively, or mixtures thereof. The mixture with ammonium salts may be obtained by passing ammonia into the acid or acids. Substances such as leather, hair, wool, feathers, fish, scraps, ammonium sulphate, cyanamide, sodium nitrate, and also, if desired, potassium compounds, may be added before or after the acid treatment. The treatment is preferably effected in a horizontal rotating autoclave. After charging, it is sealed and, if desired, heated; subsequently the autogenous or applied pressure is intermittently released. The autoclave is then partially evacuated, gaseous, anhydrous or aqueous ammonia is admitted, and the product is cooled and agitated. Sawdust may be added. After ammonification, the mass may be heated to remove water.
