Abstract

Fertilizers are obtained by adding potassium nitrate, potassium sulphate, potassium magnesium sulphate, potassium chloride or commercial potassium chloride containing fertilizer salts to phosphoric acid while heating to produce a uniform melt without substantial decomposition of the added salt, cooling the melt to produce a solid product, which is disintegrated to granular form during or after the said cooling operation, and treating the granulated product with gaseous ammonia to neutralize the free acid contained therein. Other fertilizing salts, e.g. ammonium sulphate, potassium sulphate, diammonium phosphate, lime or magnesia salts may be added to the melt. In all cases when potassium sulphate is incorporated in the melt, the proportions of the two components, potassium sulphate and phosphoric acid, are other than stachimetrical.
