Abstract

A free-flowing mixed fertilizer of high nitrogen content and acid pH is prepared by introducing a substantially reacted stable fluid suspension of urea and formaldehyde (see Division C3), having a urea to formaldehyde mol. ratio of between 1.3 and 2.75 to 1, a pH of between 8 and 14, and between 70-88% solids to a dry acidic fertilizer solids substrate, tumbling the substrate containing the suspension and curing the mixed fertilizer. The fertilizer substrate may comprise acids or acid salts, superphosphates, mono-, di- and tri-basic metaphosphates, other mono- or di-phosphates, ammonium salts, potash, soya bean hull meal, rice hulls, peanut hulls, corn cob fraction, perlite and vermiculite. The substrate may be ammoniated during the process.ALSO:The invention comprises a substantially reacted aqueous suspension of urea and formaldehyde, the suspension having a urea to formaldehyde mol ratio of between 1.3 and 2.75 to 1, a pH between 8 and 14 and containing 88% solids or less, the suspension being stable for at least 30 days. The suspension may be prepared by forming a flowable mixture urea, formaldehyde, water and between 1 and 1.5 mols of an alkaline material per 40 mols of urea, the mixture having the urea to formaldehyde ratio specified above, maintaining the mixture at 85 DEG C. to boiling temperature for at least 5 minutes and rapidly cooling the resultant suspension to about room temperature. Acids or acid salts, superphosphates, mono-, di- and tri-basic metaphosphates, other mono- and di-phosphates, ammonium salts, potash, soya bean hull meal, rice hulls, peanut hulls, corn cob fraction, perlite, vermiculite and ammonia may be added and the resin cured to give fertilizers. The preferred formaldehyde source for the preparation of the suspension is a concentrated methylolurea solution. The alkaline substance may be sodium, potassium or calcium hydroxide or magnesium oxide. An aqueous composition comprises a mixture of substantially uncondensed urea, formaldehyde, water and sufficient of a pH adjusting material to impart a pH of 10 to 14, the mixture having a urea to formaldehyde mol ratio of 1.3 to 2.75 to 1 and containing not more than 88% solids.
