Abstract
86. Freeth, F. A., and Cocksedge, H. E. Jan. 1. Ammonium chloride; sodium sulphate.-Ammonium chloride and sodium sulphate are obtained by double decomposition between ammonium sulphate and sodium chloride at below 100‹ C. by first preparing a " nucleus solution " containing ammonium chloride, sodium sulphate, and sodium chloride in proportions depending on the reaction temperature selected, and adding to this solution, either before, during, or after heating to the reaction temperature, such equivalent quantities of ammonium sulphate and sodium chloride as will give at the reaction temperature a solution saturated or nearly saturated with respect to ammonium chloride. The mixture is maintained at the reaction temperature until the reaction is complete, any loss of water being made up, and the precipitated sodium sulphate is separated and washed. The solution is then cooled, but not below a minimum temperature depending on the reaction temperature, whereupon ammonium chloride separates and is collected and washed. The remaining solution is identical with the original " nucleus solution," and the cycle of operations may be repeated indefinitely. Specification 26,263/09 is referred to.
