Abstract

Sulphonated compounds mixed or dissolved with water and/or sulphuric acid, obtained as by-products in the manufacture of substituted diphenyl-trichloroethanes, are desulphonated by injecting steam into the mixture without external heating and separating the desulphonated compound from the condensate, the temperature being maintained constant at a temperature just below the boiling point of the ternary mixture-sulphonic acid, water, sulphuric acid-by controlling the supply of steam. An example is given in which steam is introduced into a mixture of sulphonated mono-chlorobenzene, sulphuric acid and water resulting from the manufacture of D.D.T., the supply being controlled to keep the temperature at about 190 DEG C. Monochlorobenzene passes into the vapour phase and is condensed. The process is applicable also to the desulphonation of sulphonated anisole and sulphonated xylene, obtained as by-products in the preparation of dimethoxydiphenyl-trichloroethane and di-xylenyl-trichloroethane, respectively.
