Abstract
4-Chloro-3-nitro-benzene-sulphonyl chloride is obtained by heating o-chloro-nitrobenzene with more than an equimolecular quantity of chloro-sulphonic acid to a temperature of 100-135 DEG C., 2-6, especially 4-5, molecular porportions of chloro-sulphonic acid are preferred. The temperature is preferably raised to the required temperature in a series of steps as the reaction proceeds and is then maintained at that temperature until reaction ceases. The sulphonyl chloride is obtained as a solid on adding the reaction products to crushed ice and water maintained at 0 DEG C. In an example, o-chloro-nitro-benzene is heated to 100 DEG C. with a four-fold molecular excess of chloro-sulphonic acid and the temperature then raised to 130 DEG C. by hourly increases of 10 DEG C. and maintained at 130 DEG C. for three hours when the sulphonyl chloride is isolated as described above. If a particularly pure product is desired the ice water mixture is neutralised with sodium bicarbonate. 4-Chloro-3-nitro-benzene-sulphonyl chloride may be used as an intermediate in the preparation of diphenylamine dyestuffs.
