Abstract

Fatty oils and waxes are refined by treating the material with an alkali solution in at least sufficient quantity for the neutralization of the acid present and of such a concentration that the total quantity of water present does not exceed one and a half times the weight of the soap formed, the mixture being agitated to a degree insufficient to form an emulsion, and the reaction being allowed to proceed for a sufficient time, e.g. 15-30 minutes, to produce a singlephase soap, i.e. a soap conglomerate in which the water and impurities in the oil or wax remain bound to the soap flakes; the soap is then separated by centrifuging and without washing. A water-binding substance, e.g. sodium chloride, may be added to the mixture, either in solution or in solid form. The process may be effected with sodium hydroxide solution of concentration 8-35 per cent, preferably 14-24 per cent, at 30-100 DEG C., suitable 70 DEG C., optionally with the exclusion of air. The reaction vessel described in Specification 777,658, [Group II], may be used. Examples are given of the treatment of hardened crude whale oil.
