Abstract
Gum-containing fatty oils are treated so as to release the oil entrained in the gums, prior to refining, by admixing with the oil sodium hydrosulphite in aqueous solution in an amount at least 0.01 per cent by weight of the oil. The amount is preferably 0.05 to 0.125 per cent by weight of the oil. The amount of water in the solution desirably represents 0.2 to 2.0 per cent by weight of the oil. The oil is then refined, preferably using aqueous caustic soda of at least 20 DEG B<\>ae. The caustic soda is preferably used in amount just sufficient to neutralize the free fatty acid content of the oil. Temperatures of 120 DEG -160 DEG F. are satisfactory. The soapstock may be removed by gravity settling or centrifugal separation. The conditioning treatment and first refining step may be followed by an additional refining treatment with caustic soda of at least 20 DEG B<\>ae. The whole of the process may be carried out continuously. The oils treated may comprise animal, vegetable and marine oils.
