Abstract
Fatty glyceride stocks, particularly soybean and cottonseed oils, are refined by treatment with aqueous alkali in the presence of up to 10%, most preferably 0.25-0.3%, by weight of urea. The alkali used is suitably sodium hydroxide, and non-saponifying alkalis such as sodium carbonate or trisodium phosphate may also be present; the amount of alkali used should be at least sufficient to neutralize the free fatty acids present. It is preferred that the urea be added to the stock 4-5 minutes prior to the addition of the alkali.
