Abstract
531,047. Decolourizing oils and fats. LEVER BROS. & UNILEVER, LTD. July 11, 1939, No. 20129. Convention date, Sept. 30, 1938. [Class 91] Oils and fats of vegetable and animal origin are de-colourized by treatment at elevated temperature with a small amount of hypophosphorous acid or a salt thereof, e.g. sodium hypophosphite, preferably under vacuum. The treatment is preferably effected prior to the usual refining operation with an alkaline reagent. Oils and fats mentioned are palm, cottonseed, rapeseed, sesame, soya bean, kapok, groundnut and whale oils, as well as lard and tallow. Examples describe the treatment of crude palm oil with hypophosphorous acid in the proportions of 1: 2000 or with sodium hypophosphite in the proportions of 1 : 80 at a temperature of 235-255‹ C. under a pressure of 10 mm. mercury. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also describes the use of a strong reducing agent. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
