Abstract

In the purification of oils and fats by the addition of a soluble salt in conjunction with a base, such as lime or zinc oxide, which precipitates the free fatty acids as insoluble soaps, small quantities of insoluble soaps of solid fatty acids are also added to produce a precipitate of suitable consistency. Suitable additions are the lime soaps of cocoanut or palm oil, tallow, or hydrogenated fats or oils.
