Abstract
A process of making a soap-cream includes the step of making more than half of the total real soap in the cream from oils which have been hydrogenated so as to contain more than 45 per cent of saturated fatty acids having at least 18 carbon atoms per molecule, oils of the coconut-oil class being excepted. A soap-cream made by this process is stated to comprise crystals of soap in a mother liquor at all temperatures within the range 40--100 DEG F., and will, therefore, retain a creamy texture, and not become stiff or gummy, at summer temperatures. Specified oils or fats which may be hydrogenated are cottonseed, peanut, soya bean, sesame, corn, sunflower, olive, rape and linseed oils, tallow, lard, oleo oil, tallow oil, whale oil and fish oils. According to an example, a soap-cream is made from 35,2 parts of the fatty acids from cottonseed oil hydrogenated to an iodine value of less than 10, 4,8 parts of coconut-oil, 17,6 parts of caustic potash solution of 42,2 DEG B<\>ae., 2,8 parts of caustic soda solution of 42,2 DEG B<\>ae., and 39,5 parts of water.
