Abstract

Bentonites are activated by first boiling with diluted sulphuric or hydrochloric acid, draining, and washing with water, as is usual, and then neutralizing to any degree by a solution of caustic soda or other base. The product may be used for filtering and decolorizing not only mineral but also even edible vegetable or animal oils and fats, e.g. linseed, cottonseed, peanut, lard and tallow oils, and for reclaiming used lubricating-oils.
