Abstract

Vegetable and mineral oils and fats are refined by successive treatment with alkaline lye, preferably KOH, with alkali silicate and finally, after washing with water, with an acid reagent such as K alum, to correct the alkalinity due to the first two stages. In the example, 100 l. of crude oil are treated with 20 l. of a reagent consisting of 10 kilos. of 42 DEG B<\>ae. of KOH per 100 l. of water. After mixing for 20 minutes, 20 l. of reagent consisting of 2,5 l. of Na or K silicate per 100 l. of water are added. Hot water is added and after standing the water is drawn off. The oil is washed with hot water two or three times and finally washed with a 5 per cent solution of K alum. This treatment removes oxidizers gums, mucilages, parenchymes, albumins and other substances which readily oxidize or cause oxidation. Oils and fats so treated resist rancidity, thickening, discoloration and other effects of oxidation for a considerable period.
