Abstract

Fibres, batching and lubricating; fibres, treating.-Jute is first steeped and then heated or boiled in open vats for 5-6 hours in water to which is added oil which is imm scible with water and has a small degree of viscosity and a mininum of fat and of acid. It is then introduced into an acid bath containing eithe: aluminium acetate and soap, or dilute sulphurous acid, and the heating is continued for half an hour. Jute may be retted in water before stepping. Low grade jute cuttings may be first created with lime, and will require more oil. The oil is recovered by mixing the bath with the sulphuric acid bath and allowing to stand, when the oil separates out. The jute so treated may be formed into yarns for curtains, household linen, flour bags, &c. The acid treatment may be omitted where yarns for awnings, tents, sailcloth, and sacks are required.
