Degumming silk.-Raw silk is degummed by means of vegetable proteases, such for example as papain, activated by an addition of thioacids, such as thiosulpharic acid or salts of the same such as sodium thiosulphate or ammonium thiosulphate or a tetrathionate. An example is given of the degumming of silk by a solution in water of papain, sodium thiosulphate and primary ammonium phosphate and rinsing with a dilute solution of soap.
