Abstract
In the continuous manufacture of odourless soap from low-grade animal or vegetable oils and fats as described in Specification 696,050, wherein the fatty acids thereof obtained by the Twitchell splitting process are treated with molten alkali at about 300 DEG C. in the absence of water and at atmospheric pressure, the fatty acids obtained by the splitting are first treated with activated carbon. This moderates the foam formation in the subsequent reaction. The amount of activated carbon is preferably 0.2 per cent. of the weight of the fatty acids treated. Prior to the treatment with activated carbon, the fatty acids are preferably treated with activated bleaching earth, preferably in an amount of 2 per cent. of the weight of the fatty acids. The fatty acids are filtered from the purifying agents.
