[Class 49] Apparatus for continuously sterilizing sealed cans of food comprises a trough holding oil 5 having a b. pt. substantially higher than that of water, a can conveyer 2 extending into, along, and out of the trough, and pipes 7 for high-pressure steam for heating the oil. There may be provided also hot-water sprays 10 for removing oil from the cans, together with means, e.g. a centrifuge, for recovering the oil from the oil and water mixture so obtained, sprays 16 of detergent liquid, sprays 18 of cold water, and sprays 19 of air for drying the cans before labelling them.
