484,120. Preserving food. COX, L. N. (Morris, 1.) Nov. 5, 1936, No. 30127. [Class 49] [Also in Group XVII] Jars &c. of jam, fruit, &c. are sealed off by passing into the jar steam from a nozzle 16 connected by a flexible pipe 15 to a kettle &c. 10, the bung 11 by which the pipe is attached to the kettle spout, being furnished with a recess 13 to be charged with a sterilizing compound such as salicylic acid. Steam passing to the pipe 15, carries with it into the jar the sterilizing compound.. The recess 13 is conveniently closed by a perforated plate 14. The nozzle 16 is of flattened form and is slit longitudinally; it is mounted in a handle 18 which may also carry a thermometer 20 for determining the temperature of the jar.
